Outside Sales Engineer for Industrial Process Equipment

Seeking an Outside Sales Engineer to join our team to help our customers maximize their process applications with our high-quality core products – Agitators, Pumps, Mechanical Seals, and Heat Exchangers. We have been providing engineered equipment solutions for 75 years and are recognized as an industry leader in Northern California and Western Nevada. Customers in this sales territory are located in seven (7) South Bay counties including: Alameda County, Contra Costa County, Marin County, San Francisco County, San Joaquin County, San Mateo County, and Santa Clara County. We have plans to expand the geographical territory covered by this Sales Engineer into adjacent counties and into additional select accounts after the new hire gains experience and demonstrates successful sales results. A minimum of 60% travel will be required with some overnights as needed to make the best use of your time and to minimize windshield time. A company vehicle will be provided. Tracking of miles for business use to meet IRS guidelines is a requirement.

Candidates should have the combined mechanical, technical and educational qualifications necessary to succeed in this key role. Developing long-term relationships and providing excellent customer care is essential.

Desired Qualifications

  1. Engineering degree – mechanical or chemical preferred. Beneficial coursework includes: thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, energy balance and heat transfer.
  2. Product knowledge and experience with fluid processing/rotating equipment such as the products listed below.
    1. Mixers
    2. Pumps
    3. Mechanical Seals
    4. Heat Exchangers
  3. The right candidate may substitute several years of experience with rotating equipment for some of the education and product knowledge requirements.
  • Ability to interpret 2-D and 3-D cross sectional drawings of mechanical components and assemblies.
  • Computer literate with ability to quickly navigate websites and conduct product searches. Proficient in basic Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Excel, Word). Willingness to learn each of our suppliers’ web portals to get quotes, request bills of materials (BOM) and assembly drawings, place orders and determine shipping status once an order has been placed.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must communicate professionally with our team, customers and principals. Must demonstrate a professional and friendly phone demeanor.
  • Eager to work with customers and help them find the best solution(s) for their process applications. Must be a good listener. Able to develop and or maintain relationships with customers in the following target markets is preferrable.
    1. Biotech
    2. Manufacturing
    3. Power Generation
    4. Food/Beverage
    5. Electronics
    6. Emerging Technologies: carbon capturing, green energy, etc.
  • Desire and flexibility to work with our principals to meet our sales forecasts.
  • Proven Initiative and Leadership skills. Remain strategic in your approach to generating profit for the company on every order. Ability to prioritize most needed action items while working independently.
  • 1 to 2 Years minimum sales experience with successful track record or experience in sales environment (customer facing) and be willing to transition into outside sales.
  • Team player who enjoys collaborating with inside application engineers and company staff on large and small projects.
  • Willingness to participate in training webinars to enhance knowledge on all processes and keep current on new products and product updates.
  • Local candidates only – the Outside Sales Engineer is required to live in the sales territory (i.e. one of the seven South Bay Counties listed in the job description - see 3rd paragraph) No Recruiters, please.
  • Valid CA Driver’s License and proof of insurance.
  • Ability to lift at least 25 lbs.
  • Ability to supply at least three work or personal references upon offer of employment. An outside company will also do a background check of DMV and criminal records and verify degrees and certificates within the confines of California laws. Must already be authorized to work in the United States.
  • Responsibilities include

    1. Creating and sending out quotes to customers
    2. Sizing equipment (assistance from in-house application engineers and factory engineers as needed)
    3. Developing and or maintaining customer relationships through sales calls, presentations, lunch meetings, in person visits, etc.
    4. Helping our regional sales managers do joint sales calls, sales forecasting, and develop more business opportunities.
    5. You will be considered the liaison between the customer and the equipment manufacturer.

    The Outside Sales Engineer will be expected to work “inside” initially to learn more about our sizing programs, our product lines, applications for our products, the principal’s technical and commercial requirements, etc. prior to moving to the “outside” position. The duration spent “inside” will be dependent on how quickly the candidate assimilates the training material, gains the product knowledge and develops technical skills to be ready to go into the field to provide our customers with excellent technical support. Skills needed/learned “inside” to be successful in the “outside” sales role include: fundamental understanding of the equipment (pump hydraulics, fluid mixing principles, mechanical seal designs/usage, heat exchangers, etc.), being able to size the equipment using the manufacturer’s sizing software (basic/intermediate knowledge), knowing how to guide through the various manufacturer’s web based portals to create quotes, submit requests for information, requests for quoting review, look up serial numbers/parts, etc.

    Job Type: Full-time Exempt Position.

    Pay: Salary plus opportunity to earn commission after exceeding defined sales goals. Starting pay depends on experience.

    • Position is hybrid, at first “inside” will be primarily in the office, but eventually being “outside” you could potentially be working remotely a high percentage of the time (see paragraph 3)
